Three cows were stranded on a small patch of grass that remained after an earthquake. They were rescued by people who dug a track to them. The stranded cows consisted of one calf and two cows. It is said that the cows were part of a group of 14 who had survived the magnitude 7.8 earthquake though many can not be found. The farmer who saved them would saved them earlier, but it wasn't clear if another earthquake was going to appear again, so he stayed put until it was confirmed. After being rescued, the cows "desperately needed water, cows don't like living without water so that was the first requirement, and I think one or two had lost calves in the earthquake so they were a bit distressed," but they are now safe, the farmer says.
